for soprano and piano, 2005, duration: 19 minutes.7
Seven Clay Songs is a set of songs for soprano and piano. I have admired the poetry of Rachel Blau duPlessis for many years and I am delighted that Rachel and I have now been able to collaborate. The seven poems, selected from Rachel’s collection “Draft 51: Clay Songs,” are witty, full of word-play, and contain all kinds of association to other poems and poets, music, politics (both feminist and otherwise), social injustice, and sex. The music reflects the texts and results in an eclectic mix of whimsy, pathos, irony, and resignation.
